Room to Bloom

Room to Bloom is a solo exhibition by Karla King presented as part of her ongoing series ‘ Between the Margins’, through which Karla demonstrates her choice to continue growing and blooming ever more beautifully.

Karla grew up in Jamaica and arrived in the Netherlands after her studies. Like most immigrants, she had to find her way in a culture not designed for her and an environment that does not automatically make room for you. The collection in this exhibition depicts her journey to belonging, the walls she experienced and broke down. Walls erected by history and circumstances, but also the walls we ourselves, unintentionally, build from the doubt associated with having to prove ourselves. ‘Space to Grow’ emerges in relation to the environment.

In her work, Karla examines what happens between obstacles and possibilities: the choice to take up space, take root, and flourish within a community and environment. Themes in her work include identity, migration, femininity, and belonging.
