Founded in Paris in 1996 at 17 rue des Filles-du-Calvaire, Les filles du calvaire gallery established itself from the outset as an influential presence on the contemporary art scene. From an early stage, the gallery distinguished itself through its support of photographers, at a time when the medium had not yet achieved the central position it holds today within the art market and institutions. The gallery played a major role in advancing the recognition of contemporary photography and its rigorous and distinctive practices.

True to its role as a talent scout, the gallery places particular emphasis on emerging artists. Today, more than ever, it is committed to supporting contemporary artists, with a particular focus on the French art scene, which it actively promotes both nationally and internationally. To strengthen this dynamic, the gallery has, since its beginnings, opened its programme to external figures who are invited to curate exhibitions, including art critics, artists and curators.

Figuration now occupies a central place in the gallery’s programme. Whether through photography, painting, sculpture or drawing, the gallery favours works that are deeply embodied, exploring bodies, landscapes and intimate or collective narratives, while allowing ample space for interpretation and subjectivity. This artistic coherence, developed over the years, has established the gallery as a recognised space for the quality of its commitments and the distinctiveness of its perspective. Figuration here is never merely illustrative: it is a tool for storytelling, a space for projection, and a way of thinking about the world.

Since its beginnings, Les filles du calvaire has exhibited and supported the work of numerous women artists. This choice, both instinctive and committed, has naturally formed part of the gallery’s artistic direction, independently of prevailing trends or contemporary expectations.

Following a presence in Brussels from 2000 to 2010, the gallery opened a second Parisian space in 2023 at 21 rue Chapon, allowing it to broaden its programme.

From its inception, a gallery faithful to the principles that define it: defending artists, engaging with reality, and supporting the living forms of contemporary creation.
